MARINE STEWARDSHIP AND CUSTODY

Communities hold a wealth of valuable knowledge about their local environment. They witness changes firsthand, understand traditional practices, see problems early on and can suggest, prioritise and implement solutions to solve them.

We clearly see that when communities engage in decision-making and action, the results are more impactful. Taking ownership and responsibility for protecting their marine backyard encourages sustainable practices and solutions that are much more likely to address specific local needs, be culturally aligned, and with time, be passed on to the younger generations, resulting in lasting positive change.

By working together and taking collective action, communities can achieve what individuals and NGOs cannot do alone. In Mallorca this is already happening in the areas of Andratx and Pollença, which you’ll be able to read more about in the following pages.

Community is the heart and soul of the Sa Dragonera Blava and U Nord Blau projects, both of which provide beautiful examples of the value that community engagement has in building environmental awareness. These projects demonstrate that we can drive positive change through participatory decision-making and collaborative action, resulting in a healthier environment on land and at sea.
